To obtain reliable data, assessing the health of cultured cells prior to any assays is highly\u00a0recommended.\u00a0Furthermore, many cell-based assays require quantification of cell growth. Cell health and growth can be determined by quantifying cell viability, proliferation, or apoptosis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-751\" style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: transparent; font-size: 1rem;\" src=\"https:\/\/sciencellonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cell_division-1-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"cell_division\" width=\"625\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciencellonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cell_division-1-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciencellonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cell_division-1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciencellonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cell_division-1-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciencellonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cell_division-1-624x414.jpg 624w, https:\/\/sciencellonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cell_division-1.jpg 1694w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><span style=\"color: #757575; font-size: 0.857143rem; font-style: italic; background-color: transparent;\">cell_division<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Below, we compare some commonly used assays to help you determine which type is suitable for your experimental design.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cell viability assays enumerate the ratio of live and dead cells in a population. Cell viability can simply be achieved by <a href=\"\/live-dead-cell-staining-kit\/\">staining and counting live or dead cells<\/a>. \u00a0A deeper assessment of cell health can be attained by measuring cell metabolic activity, such as the ability to reduce tetrazolium salts in <a href=\"\/mtt-cell-viability-proliferation-assay\/\">MTT<\/a> and <a href=\"\/wst-1-cell-viability-proliferation-assay\/\">WST-1<\/a> assays.<\/li>\n<li>Cell proliferation assays assess dividing cells. Some common assays include BrdU incorporation (BrdU Assays) that can directly measure DNA synthesis, the detection of proliferation markers such as MKI67, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and TOP2B, and the indirect measurement of cell metabolic activity (<a href=\"\/mtt-cell-viability-proliferation-assay\/\">MTT<\/a> and <a href=\"\/wst-1-cell-viability-proliferation-assay\/\">WST-1<\/a> assays).<\/li>\n<li>Apoptosis assays are employed to evaluate the extent and timing of apoptosis by measuring key cellular events in programmed cell death, such as <a href=\"\/colorimetric-tunel-apoptosis-assay\/\">DNA fragmentation in TUNEL<\/a>, <a href=\"\/gsh-gssg-ratio-assay\/\">GSH depletion<\/a>, and <a href=\"\/caspase-3-assay\/\">caspase-3<\/a> activation.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, there are assays that can facilitate the assessment of cell health, such as <a href=\"\/cell-senescence-assay\/\">cell senescence assays<\/a> that detect senescence markers like senescence-associated \u03b2-galactosidase (SA- \u03b2-gal), and <a href=\"\/ldh-cytotoxicity-assay\/\">LDH cytotoxicity assay<\/a> that can measure cell membrane integrity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Table 1<\/strong>.
